The First Female Humanoid by Dienes Based on SMA Meet Lara
By rawert, 21:32Lara was built between years 2006-2007 at Darnstadt University of Technology. The aim was to create a more humanoid robot than those other robots that have been built before. It is all credited to Reinhard Dienes and his team .
Actuated by artificial muscles, Lara is 130cm tall with 38 artificial muscles that allow her six degrees of freedom for each leg and three degrees of freedom for the arms. The muscles allow more movement of the joints as compared to servo that has traditionally been used in joints. Due to this actuation, her movements are unique and almost resemble the human gait. Actuation is done by a shape memory metal (SMA) named NiTinol which is another writing homework well done. These SMAs are capable of changing their length up to 8% above their transformational temperature when heated by an electric current .The SMAs are capable of regaining their original shape with perfection and fast enough to allow normal movement. The architects of Lara tried to make her as transparent as possible. The only details that were not accounted to do my assignment are how interactive it is with humans. The movements are therefore generated by serial parallel connected Ni Tinol wires that have a capability of pull force and length. If flexibility of the joints is combined with some good level of interaction, there is likelihood roboticists will be at the blink of breakthrough in the effort to come up with a robot that could help in the domestic setting.
